Cymbidiums Introduction

Back To Catalogue Types

To Cymbidium Plants Catalogue >>

Ezi-Gro Orchids having been established in Darch, Western Australia for over twenty years has recently noted a renewed interest in cymbidiums with the greatest popularity being in the pendulous and novelty types.

Much of the initial work in pendulous types was done by Andy Easton but we have done work in this area as well with the Cym devonianum, Vogelsang and Fifi, being our more popular parents. I have over three hundred different grexes that are pendulous/ cascading types that I flower each year and hybridise with. Some of these interesting new grexes, are available now and some are in the laboratory.

With novelty types there are two main types.

The peloric type with the petal markings on either the petals or the sepals.
Petal pelorics happen as a chance mutation and are genetically stable. We have interesting clones on the way from plants I have sourced from all over the world. Sepal pelorics are produced by hybridising a plant that has genes from Cleo’s Melody ‘Freakout’ in the background. This feature is also genetically stable. When a seedling cross is made, fifty percent of the progeny usually show the pelorism. I have been working in this area for quite some time and we are starting to see some wonderful pelorics, with some of these currently available and many more to come. There is so much more work to be done in this area and hopefully one day I will produce a sepal peloric and petal peloric in the one flower.

The other novelty type is the spotted progeny. We are trying to produce progeny with big blotches of red colour, and we are starting to see this happening, however we have a long way to go to improve shape and flower count.

The one area in particular that we have excelled in is the intermediate and small standard types, with our breeding resulting in award quality plants.

With the acquisition of many of Greg Bryant’s large flower parents, we are hoping to produce some wonderful cymbidiums in the standard size. Greg Bryant was achieving some amazing results with his standard parents and I am very grateful for his generosity in allowing me to obtain some of his breeding gene pool.

Some more wonderful news is that we are again being supplied with hybrids that have been produced by Andy Easton, with some being available in the next year or two. Watch out for these, especially those wanting heat tolerant cymbidiums and pendulous cymbidiums that have Cym devonianum tetraploid as a parent.

The quality of cymbidiums is going ahead in leaps and bounds, with plants getting easier to flower, some even flowering on their first bulb. Buy a few new cymbidiums and update your collection.

PRICES
We are keeping the same price structure as the 2002 catalogue;

SIZE OF PLANT                        HYBRID    MERICLONE
A= SINGLE GROWTH                    $7         $15
B=BULB AND GROWTH                 $12        $20
C= TWO BULBS AND GROWTH      $17        $25
D= FLOWERING SIZE                    $22        $30

Plants in flower or bud may be priced higher, and a charge of $20 will be placed on small orders of less than $200 to cover freight costs. Prices may vary if freight costs increase sharply.

Orders over $500 will receive a 10% discount, over $1000 a 20% discount. Orders over $120 are sent freight free within Australia except for remote areas and plants where large flowering size plants are requested, as these can weigh between 0.5 to 1.0 kilograms in weight so a small payment towards freight may be required. Plants will be sent bare rooted by Airmail to your home whenever possible.

MERICLONES
We clone about twenty new cultivars per year, with the quality of our own mericlones constantly improving as we continue to set higher standards. Most of these clones are exclusive to our nursery and have been chosen from many thousands of newly flowered seedlings. Clones are tested for virus at the time they are sent to the laboratory.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Some of the plants in this catalogue are in short supply; we will not substitute unless told to do so. We often get requests for a particular cultivar. We are happy to sell a division if the plant is big enough but often are unable to find the requested plant due to the huge number of plants kept in my own personal collection. If requesting a particular plant please ask during it’s flowering time to make location easier.

There are nearly one thousand listings in this catalogue with most being new. We hope there are some that will be of interest to you. We have included over two hundred photographs of our mericlones.

Plants can be purchased in the flask stage or community pot containing five to six plants per pot. Flasks contain twenty five plants and retail for $55. Discounts apply to commercial orders and please request a listing as stock is constantly changing.

The catalogue alphabetically lists mericlones and hybrids together. The code prior to the orchid name indicates the type. H=hybrid, M=mericlone.

Bloom sizes can be hard to predict, where possible blooms that are to be small are stated in the description. If no size is indicated, then one can expect a standard. Plant sizes follow the name; flowering time will also vary and are only a guide.

The nursery accepts MasterCard and Visa Card, however if you prefer to pay by cheque please confirm availability of plants before sending payment. This list supersedes previous listings.

OVERSEAS CUSTOMERS
Overseas customer’s enquiries are welcome and we can organize Cites and Photosanitary certificates, however we require a copy of your quarantine import permit. Approximate costs are, Cites $35 and Photosanitary certificate $150. Freight costs depend on the size of order and destination. Minimum size order is $500 and a minimum of five plants for any one listing. Payment of order is required before the orchids are sent.

We welcome any visitors to our nursery. Please ask to be shown around. We would love to hear from you, your success in flowering new seedlings. I hope you enjoy the photographs and the content of this catalogue.
